Question by creativestarwish: desire to open a studio hair salon- questions?
My ultimate goal and dream in my career as a stylist and makeup artist is to open up a studio salon. I have unique ideas and have had a business plan drawn up for two years, but keep adding to it as my ideas keep growing. There is no other studio salon like the one I have in mind around this area. I want to be the first to do this, but need to do some more homework first. I am a great stylist and makeup artist, but that doesn’t mean I’d make a great business owner.

So these question not only apply to salon owners, but for small-business owners as well: What can I do to educate myself more on opening a business? What are the #1 things I need to know before I do this. How can I make sure that my studio salon will not fail?

Thanks in advance! Any help, suggestions or ideas would be appreciated greatly.

please read… i have a business plan made up. I have been editing it for the past two years. I have every little detail, cost, amount, etc. for what I would need in order to have an 8 chair salon.

Starting a small business takes a lot of courage. But, as they say, courage does not pay the bills. To be successful – to stay in business – you need more than courage. You need a combination of hard work, skill, perseverance, and lots of luck.

Some things you need to consider:
- “How can I support my family while I build up by business?”
- “What are my abilities?”
- “Is there a market for the product or service I have chosen?”
- “How long will it take this business to reach the financial goal I have?”

Remember a business plan is only a guide. In fact, I’ve met many entrepreneurs in my line of work who eventually found their business plans USELESS because of too many simplistic (if not tototally false assumptions made). It may do you good if you enroll in an entrepreneurship course. They have courses such as Smart Start Entrepreneur 101 for $ 35

Question by rach0626: Is it illegal for an office building not to have sprinklers or smoke detectors?
We were going through our business insurance plan and we just realized (by simply looking up at the ceilings!) that the office we’ve been leasing does not have sprinklers, smoke detectors, fire alarms, or anything of the like. We checked in the hallways, stairwells, and bathrooms and there do not seem to be any protective safety measures for fire hazards. The building we work in also leases to a dry cleaner and a hair salon, businesses that deal with high temperature machinery. Isn’t this illegal? We’re trying to figure out if our landlord is sneaking by inspection laws or something.

Instead of asking that question here, try checking with your city/state building inspectors about the building codes that apply in your state. They vary from state to state and also by the age of the building in some states.

Question by : Huntington Beach or Fountain Valley, CA?
Hello,I am planning to move to Orange County, California and I was wondering which city is best for me. I wanted to be somewhere near Anaheim and Huntington Beach. I currently reside in a small town in WI, less than 20,000 population. I have questions about both of the mentioned cities.

-Huntington Beach-
I happen to think this city is beautiful and I’d love to live there. Is there anyone that lives here that would give me a description of what it’s like? I’m under the impression that it’s very pricey to live here, since it’s on a beach and whatnot. Is that true? Also, where I’m from, we can live in mobile homes in trailer parks. Is there any such thing in Huntington Beach? Or is it all housing? If you’ve been here before, what’s it like? Is it a big city? Are people there friendly and courteous? Is the shopping good (more than one mall with a variety of stores). I live in a 20 business town, what’s the comparison? Is there a place where concerts are held? Like “The Farm” in Las Vegas? A building or park where bands play? Tell me as much as you know.

-Fountain Valley-
Same questions apply, what are prices on homes, is there a large hispanic population? Mobile homes? Weather? Rain? Snow? Concert, main attractions? How far are either of the 2 locations from Anaheim? Tell all that you know, give me an idea of what it’s like to live in either place and help me decide which of the two I should move to. Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to move to Huntington Beach. Now I realize how expensive it is to live right on the Pacific Ocean coast, by Crystal Cove and Laguna Beach. Is there a difference between living near the beach in Huntington Beach? Is it cheaper and more residential to live on the other side of town?

I’ve hear that schooling in FV is not so good. Is there a lot of houses for sale? Or is it difficult to find land in either places? How rare are job openings? Is there a lot of cosmetology there? Nail care salons, Spas, hair/makeup places? Is there Weildig jobs?

Uhh… Huntington Beach for certain, though it’ll be more
expensive. Fontana is known as ‘Fon-Tucky’ as in Kentucky
as in hick ville. Also, they have massive foreclosure rate
and high un-employment

Question by : Is this a good online business idea?
Hello. I would like to quit my job and become rich as well as achieving financial freedom. I would like to start an online business.

I would create custom websites for new and small businesses like hair salons, small retail stores, small law firms, small financial planning firms, etc. I do not have much knowledge in CSS or HTML, but since I would be working for very small companies, I would need just a professional design and some features. Websites like weebly,com and webs.com can offer me this, and I would upgrade to more professional levels to get more options when building the website.

I would also offer social and web marketing in addition to the web design as most of these companies will not already have a web presence. I am very good with marketing.

So even though I won’t be a mega web design firm that does 100k projects, all I am looking for is a nice business to replace my current six figure a year job. I still think I can pull it off even though i would be using a drag and drop based design software. Maybe I could later upgrade to a more professional software.

I think that everyone wants to have their “get rich” scheme work out.

However, this is not an original idea and as i don’t want to “cut you up or anything” i would suggest that you come up with a new software that will be useful besides a website designer.
Ex. Chemistry Reaction Calculator

Also, i don’t see any use of “replacing” a six-figure a year job. If anything try out this idea, or lack there of, while keeping your current job and see how everything goes.

In conclusion, if you think that you can pull off this idea, then go for it, but I don’t see you making 100,000+ anytime soon with a great deal of competitors using the same method you are considering.
